This summer our library will be under renovation, but there are still plenty of resources online and in our library to help you explore your own adventure! Learn a new language, research a new subject, learn how to make crafts or just check out a new author! Come by the library starting Saturday, June 15th to pick up your registration gift and get your journey started! Come meet our new instructor Kate! Relaxing and invigorating, Qigong (pronounced chee goong), is an ancient, meditative movement practice that fosters physical and mental health for coping with the stresses of daily life.  Qi is vital energy found in everything in the universe; Gong is a skill cultivated through steady practice. The benefits include increased balance, calmness, strength, stamina, flexibility. Beginners are welcome! Wear loose clothing and soft shoes.  Bring a mat (optional) and water.

FCA’s Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Program offers free assistance and support to caregivers who are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. We are funded by the Willing Hearts, Helpful Hands Program from Parker Jewish Institute for Healthcare and Rehabilitation. We support our families by offering care consultations by our licensed professionals in our support groups.

*Note: This group used to meet at the library, but now meets at the First Methodist Church at 25 Broadway in Amityville while we are under construction.

Community Legal Help Project

The CLHP’s network of non-profit partners and pro bono volunteers provide legal information, referrals, and limited-scope representation through a phone line and brief-in person consultations at public libraries.  The areas of law that most of the attorneys’ consult at the library are immigration, family, landlord-tenant, senior, criminal, and bankruptcy law.  They will help patrons by providing legal or non-legal information or a referral elsewhere.

Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council’s Medicaid Enrollment assistants will be in the library to provide Medicaid enrollment assistance to adults and children who are disabled or blind, and anyone over the age of 65. Bereavement Group

The library is offering an eight-week support group for the recently bereaved. Participants will learn about the grief process: develop skills to manage their grief: and help them to adjust to life without their loved one. This is open to anyone who has lost a spouse/partner, parent, child, grandchild, sibling or other family member. The group will be facilitated by Catherine R., LCSW-R, a Bereavement Counselor. American Sign Language  is the third most used language in the United States. In this beginner class you will learn finger spelling, numbers, vocabulary and basic conversational phrases. Instructor Rosemary Algios holds a degree in American Sign Language and has many years of experience.

Mah Jongg for Beginners

If you know nothing about Mah Jongg but would like to learn, this course will introduce you to this exciting game of luck and skill! Learn the tiles, how to read the card and set up basic play. By the end of the class, you will be able to form your own game with friends or classmates. Based upon National Mah Jongg League rules. Mah jongg cards and sets will be provided for practice. If you have access to your own set, feel free to bring it!
